COMMUNITY GROUPS PRAISE SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS AT SUNOCO

MARCH 2, 2006--Clean Water Action and the Community Labor Refinery Tracking Committee (CLRTC) today praised Sunoco’s announcement of planned changes in their use and storage of the toxic chemical Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) at their southwest Philadelphia refinery. The announced change entails modifying the HF stored at the refinery, reducing the danger to the surrounding community in the event of an accident.

HF is a highly toxic chemical used at the refinery, which, if released into the air, could form a dense, ground-hugging cloud that could travel up to 25 miles, potentially causing severe respiratory disorders, heart attacks and even death for up to 4 million area residents. Sunoco’s proposed change would reduce the volatility of the HF, reducing the risk that it would be dispersed into the air in neighboring communities. Sunoco announced today that it will be applying for permission from Philadelphia Air Management Services in April to incorporate new technology at the plant that would utilize modified (less volatile) HF.

Joanne Rossi of the CLRTC, a neighborhood watchdog group that monitors the Sunoco facility said, “I am ecstatic that Sunoco is putting their best foot forward. Those of us who live near the refinery can now look at Sunoco as a better neighbor!” Sonnet Gabbard, Program Organizer for Clean Water Action commented “Sunoco’s announcement marks a step in the right direction toward protecting Philadelphia area residents, especially those who live in the shadow of the refinery.”

Both Clean Water Action and the CLRTC have worked for a switch to a safer alternative to HF at Sunoco’s refinery for more than two years. According to Gabbard, “Thousands of community members have signed petitions and written letters to Sunoco urging them to switch to modified HF. We are thrilled that Sunoco has listened to them and agreed to take action.”

Added Ms. Rossi “Sunoco’s action makes the neighborhoods around the refinery safer, healthier places to live, and helps reduce the threat that has been hanging over our heads. We are thrilled to see it happen!”
