![]() The "Bucket Brigade" is a simple, but effective, tool that dozens of communities are using to find out for themselves what chemicals are in the air. Armed with their own data and information about the health effects of chemicals, these communities are winning impressive reductions of pollution, safety improvements, and increasing enforcement of environmental laws. |
![]() Hydrogen Fluoride is a highly toxic chemical used at refineries to boost the production of high-octane gasoline. When released, HF forms a dense, ground-hugging cloud of lethal gas that can travel for 5 miles before dissipating. The Sunoco Refinery uses and stores 400,000 pounds of HF, endangering the health and well-being of 3.9 million people in a 25-mile radius.
![]() In 1994, the Sunoco Refinery accidentally released 70 tons of catalyst dust coated with heavy hydrocarbons. Although it was not toxic, citizens were concerned that no system existed to notify them of the accident or what precautions to take to protect their health. In 1997, funds from a fine against Sunoco were allocated to purchase 10 emergency notification sirens. |
![]() CLRTC is committed to the empowerment of communities through information. The more we know about what is in our air, the more we can do to cut down on pollution and protect our health. CLRTC works with the City of Philadelphia Air Management Services to ensure we have comprehensive air pollution monitoring.
