What's in Our Air?CLRTC is committed to the empowerment of communities through information. The more we know about what is in our air, the more we can do to cut down on pollution and protect our health.Current Air Monitor LocationsThe City of Philadelphia operates air monitoring at 14 different sites:

How can we improve monitoring?CLRTC is working to get a new air monitor station installed at 24th St and Ritner Ave. Right now, there is no monitor in South or Southwest Philadelphia that is downwind of the refinery. Therefore, there is no monitor that can adequately determine the emission of the refinery. The proposed site at 24th and Ritner would provide that important information to the community. In addition, CLRTC has lobbied City Council President Anna Verna for her support in getting a fine particulate matter monitor installed at this new site. With her support, the city has agreed to install a fine particulate monitor.More Testing for More Chemicals, More Often!!Of the 54 chemicals detected by the Bucket Brigade in 2003, Philadelphia's Air Management Services (AMS) monitored for only five. For example, the Sunoco Refinery releases over 20,000 pounds of Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) each year, yet AMS does not monitor for it at any of their stations. In addition, when odor complaints are registered at the AMS hotline, samples are not taken to find out what the community is breathing. Inspectors should go out into communities when complaints are registered.
